27 Lage 4385: Finding Mirhandrax
Jul. 22nd, 2010 07:44 amI checked Arconandi’s favorite pub which is a pretty lousy place to look for anyone before noon. The place was almost deserted but the proprietor recognized Mirhandrax by description. He thought Mirhandrax was a knight of Kvarse and suggested I ask at Kvarse’s main temple. Which is of course on the Boulevard of Seven Plus Twelve same as the Temple of Reflections in the Void where I’d just come from. Argh! I rushed back to the Boulevard and to the Temple of the Body Entire.
Kvarse is a complete sweetheart. She’s one of my favorite gods because even though she’s not as fascinating as “Here” she is much less painful. (Not that I don’t love you anyway “Here”!) She’s the goddess of Corpordor and in charge of the Healer’s Guild and her guild is a LOT nicer than practically all the other guilds (they let you test out of apprenticeships for instance and they’re good about helping healers to learn pattern spells instead of trying to keep a tight grip on the monopoly of their current casters and all kinds of other good stuff).
The Temple of the Body Entire is quite pretty. It’s a bit boring compared to “Here”’s temple but that’s to be expected isn’t it? It’s not like some other god is going to show up the god of space when it comes to using space. Kvarse’s temple is made of wood but not ordinary rectangular planks. Instead the wood is shaped into blocky stylized shapes representing each of the Prime races. The shapes fit together like giant pieces in a child’s jigsaw puzzle.
The Temple opens on a Great Hall, which is a huge room with no support columns. It has outer walls of wood, but the roof is mainly held up by ritual magic and, today, the outstretched arms of a gigantic image of Kvarse. The priests of Kvarse have the decor in the Great Hall changed every few months, so it's always something different.. Today it was all Illusidor images of Corpador beings: Primes, animals, and monsters, all moving in and out of the Hall as part of a vast choreographed story of life and death. The animals pantomimed running up nonexistent trees or hiding behind invisble bushes before getting killed by Primes hunters or by monsters, then the monsters would pounce out of imperceptible trees to fight and be killled by Prime adventurers, and the Primes expired peacefully of old age. Except for the Zi Ri, who fluttered around watching the whole thing without ever taking part in it. The scene filled the hall, with Primes wall-walking on the walls and monsters from Underneath flying around near it or pantomiming clinging to nonexistent stuff on the ceiling, as if the Hall were some kind of tiny inside-out branch. I saw some baby animals and monsters born into the scene too, but no Primes; new little Primes would come onto the scene with their parents from one of the doors. I didn't see anything actually mating either so whoever designed it had some taste anyway.
I waved to the priests (they were easy to pick out from the illusions because the Primes in the illusions were all very dressed in primitive styles) and wandered around for a bit distracted by the display. One of the priests must've thought I'd come to visit Corycavy because Corycavy came out while I was looking. "Delight-in-Leather! However are you, little girl? It's been a Zi Ri's age."
"Hallo Corycavy! It's Delight-in-Justice now how do you do?" I gave her a big hug. Corycavy is a sweet pudgy middle-aged Rassimel with silvery strands of fur sparkling in her mask and her stripes. I put the sparkles there for her. She said she didn't want to cover up her greying muzzle -- "I've earned that white!" -- but she did want a bit more dazzle.
"I am wonderful, thank you. Are you enjoying the current installation? I must say I liked it better before the wilderness they used to romp around in faded out." Corycavy hugged me back and then turned to survey the Temple hall with me.
"Ohhhh. That explains a lot." It would've looked much better with the animals interacting with visible plants and stuff instead of pantomiming.
"The craft-mages who put it in insisted that it was part of their plan to show the supremacy of the Body, since our Lady 'should not be upstaged by Virid within her own temple'." Corycavy's whiskers twitched. "I am ... unconvinced. But we'll be replacing it soon, so nothing to fuss on now."
"Replacing it already didn't you just get it? This is the first time I've seen it."
Corycavy smiled at me. "Then you've not been by in quite the while, Justice."
"I was just here to get the Scroll of Awesomenity consecrated oh wait ... "
"That was, what, four months ago? Five?"
"And I forgot to bring Kvarse a present ohhhh!" I smacked my forehead with my hand and rushed to the nearest priestess. "Everfree I'm so sorry I didn't bring Kvarse a present would you apologize to her for me pleeeease? Tell her I'll bring back something nice for her when I get home from my adventure."
Everfree gave me a bemused kind of nod and went back to the blessing she was working on for a healer's kit.
Corycavy took my arm and drew me back from the busy priestess. "You're going on another adventure, little girl?"
"Oh yes that's why I'm here! I need adventuring companions and Archonandi can't come because you talked him into being a smith so he said I should ask Mirhandrax instead is he here?"
Corycavy frowned, her head bobbing up and down as she tried to follow along. "Mirhandrax? Why yes, I believe he's around. Let me ask around, he's often visiting Nastrothon Memorial Sanctuary." Nastrothon Memorial Sanctuary is technically on League Boulevard, the road that runs parallel to the Boulevard of Seven Plus Twelve where all the Temples are. But the Sanctuary and Kvarse's temple are back-to-back, and the land between them is a park. The Sanctuary serves as a house of recuperation for people who have injuries or deformities that don't respond quickly to magical healing. Most injuries can be fixed immediately by prompt treatment, but sometimes primes aren't able to get to a healer in time and have to suffer through a slow and often incomplete recovery. That's just one of the reasons I made sure to get a healer first.
I followed Corycavy to the park behind the Temple. I like the Kvarse's park, it's like a playground for both children and adults. There's a garden maze that shifts its pattern, and swinging vines, and a water spirit that zwoops a mini river along an up-and-down circuit of the park, and all these adorable tame animals for people to pet and play with, and some other neat stuff.
Corycavy strolled down the park's main path between the two buildings. I followed a little behind her. As I was looking around to see if there was anything new, I saw a giant shaggy-furred head looming above one of the garden-maze walls.
"Never mind, Corycavy! I think I found him!"

Date: 2010-07-22 07:05 pm (UTC)Corycavy seems like a dear. (not to be confused with a deer) So what sorts of present does Kvarse like? Maybe you can offer to bring back a small animal. Except, what would Kvarse (or more likely the priests of Kvarse) do with the animal afterward? Maybe better to leave it as 'it's the thought that counts'.
