27 Lage 4385: Asking Archonandi
Jul. 11th, 2010 11:58 amAsking Archonandi
Arcsy and I've worked together on several jobs in the past. He's very serious about adventuring and has collected all kinds of gear for it. He's got chainmail and a steel shield and an enchanted flail and an amulet that casts Deflect Corpador and a whole bunch of adventuring pattern spells. He's really good with them too. I almost went to ask him before I went to the Healer's Guild but I knew where to find the guild and I didn't know where Arcsy would be at this time of day. Or even if he'd be in town.
I went to his house but of course he wasn't there why would anyone be at home ever? Fressis was there (she's his fiancée I think unless that changed). She was happy to see me and was extra nice to me which surprised me because I don't know her that well and she hadn't seemed to care for me the other times we'd met. She asked me in and offered me kathia and asked how I was and if I needed anything. But I was in a rush so I just told her that I was looking for Arcsy and did she know where he was?
"He's at Master Blyn's forge," she said, and gave me directions.
Master Blyn is an armorsmith so I figured Arcsy was ordering new armor. But when I got there I saw him at one of the worktables, turning coils of steelwire into links for chainmail.
The apprentice in the front shop was busy with a customer so I orrened around the shop counter to the work area and sat down on the table next to Archonandi. "Halloooo Arcsy I didn't know you could rent time in a workshop or is Master Blyn doing you a favor like the way I got to use one of the Academy's enchantment laboratories?"
Arcsy gave me a puzzled frown. "What?"
"Why's Master Blyn letting you use his workshop to fix your armor?" I asked, louder to be heard over the roar from the forge.
"What? No, I'm not here to fix my armor." He snipped off links from the coil, setting them in a bin to his right.
"So you're fixing it for a friend?" I glanced over the table to see if I recognized the armor he was working on, but there wasn't a set on it. I put my hands on the table between my legs and leaned down to look under the table.
"What? Delight-in-Here, I'm not fixing anyone's armor."
That explained why there wasn't any under the table, either. "You're making new armor for yourself why did something happen to yours? Oh and it's Delight-in-Justice now."
Arcsy laughed. "No! I'm not making anything on my own behalf. Dee, I work here."
I straightened and blinked at him. "What?"
"Master Blyn hired me. I'm rather old for an apprenticeship, true. But since I've a lot of field experience in armor repair, he's agreed to take me on and teach me the rest of the trade."
"... what?"
"I'm going to be an armorer!" Archonandi paused in his clipping to beam at me.
I stared at him in horror. "But ... an apprenticeship?"
"It shouldn't last too long. Master Blyn expects me to make journeyman by next year."
"But Arcsy you're an adventurer! You've devoted your whole life to it. It's your passion!"
"Not any more." He turned his gaze back to the coil, snipping off more links with a heavy pair of steel-shears. "I had a long talk with Corycavy and she straightened me out. A Rassimel can't have two true passions in his life, so if I was truly serious about Fressis and starting a family, then I needed to give up adventuring. And if I was serious about adventuring, it's not fair to Fressis to let her make me her passion. I had to choose."
"But ... but ... lots of Rassies have a family that's not their passion!" I guess that sounds like a horrible thing to say, but it's true.
Arconandi cut the last two links on the coil apart and waved a hand dismissively. "Sure, maybe it can work if what you're passionate about is painted eggs or gardening." Archonandi reached around me to get another tightly-wound coil of steel and started snipping of links from it as he continued. "But adventuring isn’t something you can do as a sideline. It consumes your life, or it kills you. Or both. It’s no good pretending I can indulge the urge ‘just once in a while’. Talking to Corycavy made me realize that. And that I want Fressis – I want a family – I want a life -- more than I want to be hiking the Verticals, hunting monsters and looking for treasure."
"But – but – adventurers do important work too!" I thumped the table with my tail. "I rescued Corycavy during an adventure!"
Arcsy patted my knee. "I know, I know, I don’t mean there’s anything innately wrong with it. This is … this is just about me. I want a different path for the rest of my life, and I’m going to take one. What’s got you so wound-up about it now? I thought you’d retired too?"
"I can’t believe she talked you out of adventuring!" I flopped backwards on the table, sprawling across a pile of not-yet-coiled wires. "I had quit but I’m taking an assignment now because I need the money and I can do it as a sideline are you suuuuuure you can’t?"
My Rassimel friend smiled and shook his black-masked head at me. "I’m sure. Sorry, Delight-in-Justice."
I covered my face in with my hands. A new voice near me growled, "Who are you and what are you doing back here?" I peeked out between my fingers at an annoyed Cani with pointed ears and black-and-tan shepherd styling.
"It’s all right, Journeyman Hrone. She’s a friend," Arcsy vouched for me.
"Did you let her back here? The workroom’s for smiths only, Archonandi."
"Noooo I let myself back here sorrrry." I bounced off the table. "I’ll leave! Arcsy you don’t know any other adventurers looking for work do you because I need some people today? Warriors?"
Archonandi thought quickly while the Cani scowled at me with bared teeth. "Mirhandrax, maybe? He’s a Gormorror knight and an excellent fighter. He’s a touch finicky about the work he’ll do, but he's a good sort."
Hrone grabbed my arm. "All right, that’s enough chatter, missy. Out you go!"
I squirmed out of Hrone's grip as he tried to steer me to the door. "Sure thing byeeee Arcsy! Have fun with your new life!"
Then I dashed out the door before Hrone tried to Cani-handle me any more. Last I heard he was barking something at the apprentice in the front shop about keeping customers out of the workroom. "And that goes twice for non-customers!"

I guess that's just the way it seems when you're not in any of them. The Furstylist's guild was okay actually. Up until they kicked me out anyway.
Besides you have an apprentice Phaniet! Oh wait he means a smithing apprentice. I guess you aren't teaching Phaniet how to smith?
