"Halloooo Purzzhon! Noooo I still don't have a job and my rent's due tomorrow so I have to get something to-day." I tried to hide the adventuring advertisement I was looking at from him.

He nosed my hand aside with his broad greenish-black muzzle, staring at it with yellow eyes. "You do not tell me before that you are the adventurer."

"I didn't? I thought casting the Raven's Beak was a giveaway anyway."

Digression on Adventuring

It occurs to me that maybe this doesn't work for all my extradimensional friends because it doesn't work for all nonprimes on World Tree and I don't know how Prime-analogue-ish you all really are so I should explain.

Primes learn a lot faster during experiences which are dangerous and risky. This doesn't just apply to adventuring but it's most obvious during adventures. Because you learn everything that you're doing faster on an adventure. Not just the things that are really important but anything that just happens to come up even if it's only vaguely incidental. So it's good to make sure to do as many different things while you're adventuring (or doing something that might count as an adventure like escaping from a pack of unfriendly Cani at a butcher shop) as you can manage. The Raven's Beak is a complexity 5 pattern spell that uses all the magic Nouns and two of the Verbs. Because it's so simple, almost everyone can cast it and if you cast it while you're on an adventure you get practice in all of those Nouns and Verbs at once. It's a very efficient way to get better at magic fast if you're adventuring. Almost all the adventurers I know have it grafted and use it when they're out adventuring. But practicing all the Nouns and two Verbs is about all it's good for. It gives a teeny bit of defense to all Nouns except Durudor, against which it gives an imperceptible bit of defense because Durudor is really hard to use magic on. So pretty much only adventurers get it grafted or think about spending cley to cast it just because what you're doing might count as an adventure.

Back to the Post Office

"It is the clue maybe." Purrzhon glanced at the other advertisements I'd been looking at. "You are not getting the new fur-styling job, then?"

"Noooo ... I can't right now anyways my guild membership's suspended. I sort of quit adventuring last year but I need money now soooo ... "

The big panther dropped his paw from my shoulder and fell back to the ground. "What is your specialty as an adventurer?"

"Ummm ... Locador, I guess. I have Nowhere Prison and Thick Distance Armor and Change Places grafted. I'm pretty good with Locador since "Here" loves me." As I spoke, Purrzhon prowled around my feet and looked me up and down consideringly. I twisted around to watch him, and noticed he had a post-leaf stuck to the claws of his right forepaw. "Are you looking to get a job adventuring too? Do you wanna get one with me? You're not a healer are you?"

"No. I am not the healer. I am the better with Destroc than Helaoc, and the better with claws and fangs than either. You can bind these spells?"

"Yes well except Nowhere Prison which isn't a great spell bound anyway. Did you want to buy some bound spells?" I asked hopefully.

Purrzhon stared at me with his slitted yellow eyes for a moment, not answering. Then he said, "I am not looking for the adventuring job." He flexed his claws, slicing deeper into the post-leaf caught on his paw. "But I have the adventuring job, and maybe I am hiring the adventurers to do it with me."

As you're a friend of Sythyry, I trust the meaning and appropriateness of this phrase will not be lost on you:

"The Doom!"

Or you'll be dead or captured by monsters and Glorious-Blue will be free to find a new roommate, which works out too.

It seems that he does indeed have the adventuring job, just in time to catch you with it.

I hope you have fun with this one!

So did you learn fur styling on an adventure? Make sure he hires a herethroy so you can practice chitin-painting.

Have fun on your adventure with Purrzhon! ^_^ Be sure not to mention that I gave you tips about sleeths, or he will feel like he has to act contrary to them just to prove me wrong!

Well, my particular world doesn't have a specific "danger makes you learn faster!" system, but it is definitely part of our storytelling tradition! Many of our visual storytelling mediums show the rapid improvement of skill, either through intense training, or people simply getting better through overcoming adversity and risk, and "pushing" themselves. So it's not unknown, just mostly limited to narrative stories...

I wonder if you could sell bound spells ... well, next time you have money to spare, buy a few spells that go well bound (The Ready Adulterer is always popular among cissy-folk who need such protections), and the next time you're short, you'll have something honorable to do for turning cley into cash.
