When I got home from visiting my parents yesterday it was almost sunout. My scroll was on my desk and GloriousBlue was getting ready for work. "Your brother dropped it off. He left you a note."

The note said:
Delight-in-Justice:
Thank you for the loan of your scroll. I've taken the liberty of having certain sections from the Wizard Sythyry's writings copied out for further investigation by the Temple. The situation with hCevian and Feralan is ... most disturbing, in several respects. I appreciate your bringing this to my attention.

Void-Dancer
I opened the scroll to see if there was anything new and Boomsy had written! Yes! He got it and he wrote me back and I left him a note and halloooooo Boooooomsy! I'm so glad you got it and you like it. I should've written more but I was tired so I just went to bed.

And woke up eighty-three million times from nightmares. THANK YOU KIJJI.

I wasn't going to run around visiting everyone AGAIN though since I'm (almost completely) sure it's just my imagination. Instead I wrote down everything that I did yesterday.

I really do need to find another job but I don’t know what I want to do. I thought I’d make a list in here and see if that helps me decide.

Librarian
Advantages:
  1. I’ve never done it before!
Disdavantages:
  1. I’ve never done it before

  2. I don’t know what librarians actually do

Spell Scribe
Advantages:
  1. Guild membership just requires paying dues and having a patron – if a mage will hire me to do spell-scribing, I can do it. No testing, no apprenticing.

  2. I know how to box spells

  3. I have a bunch of spells already grafted that I could scribe

  4. Pay's pretty good.
Disadvantages:
  1. DULLEST. JOB. EVER. x.x

  2. You usually get paid after completion, so it's a slow way to make money.

  3. If you mess up boxing a spell you don't get paid for the time you wasted not-boxing it. And it's easy to mess up.

  4. Did I mention dull?

  5. I've boxed like nine spells in my life. Seven staring gods SO BORING.

Fur-styling
Advantages:
  1. I’m good at it

  2. I know lots of people in the field

  3. I had a lot of repeat business at Abbser-wabbser’s, some of whom would probably come to me wherever I worked.

  4. Pay is reasonable and you get paid the same day you work
Disadvantages:
  1. Kinda bored of it now

  2. My guild membership is suspended

Riverbum
Advantages:
  1. Easy
Disadvantages:
  1. Unpleasant in winter and miserable in Cold Surprise

  2. I like living in the city

  3. Lots of the water in Vheshrame Mene is locked up by fisheries nowadays so it’s hard to find a place to riverbum anywhere near anywhere. There’s the riverbum village that Dad-Dad’s grandparents lived in, I guess.

  4. Pay isn't.

Adventurer
Advantages:
  1. Done it before

  2. Usually not boring

  3. Can pay very well

  4. No guild membership required (there is an adventurer's guild but you don't have to join it to adventure. You can't really stop people from adventuring anyway.)
Disadvantages:
  1. Not so much a career as a death sentence

  2. Expensive; I'd need to pick up another bound Heal the Awful Wound (which I really *should* do anyway because accidents happen even if you're not an adventurer) and Pretense of Health at minimum

  3. Pay is highly dependent on finding a good assignment or the right location

  4. Pay is usually after completion
Enchanter
Advantages:
  1. I know how to enchant

  2. Not as boring as boxing spells
Disadvantages
  1. Need to apprentice x.x

  2. Guild dues are really really high and I hear the guild is very restrictive on how much you can sell in a year

  3. Components are expensive

  4. TWELVE WEEKS x.x

  5. Advances often don't cover the cost of components never mind labor so payment is slow even if it is good
Information-seller
Advantages?
Disadvantages?
Um. I don't really know how this would work well enough to know what the advantages or disadvantages would be. Gavsy said I could make money by finding out things from other universes using my Scroll of Awesomenity and then selling that information to the right people. He thought all of you would be able to answer questions about math and stuff that Primes here would still care about. I guess I'd talk to professors about it? I'm not sure if it's actually legal for me to make money using an enchantment I made when I'm not an enchanter. It's ... probably okay. There might be a law against imports that makes selling information illegal or taxable or something. I have no idea. I don't really think I want to try doing this. Not right now anyway.

I guess this means I'm supposed to go back to fur-styling? It's the only one with more advantages than disadvantages.

Or adventuring. I wouldn't need to get reinstated at a guild for that. Though I do need lozens for bound spells. Unless I can get a healer to go with me. Trust is a healer, but he's not not an adventurer. He really should learn some adventuring though he gets into enough trouble for one.

I don't know. I think I'll go out to a puppet show. Maybe I could get a job as a puppeteer? That looks fun.

Could you trade some of your bound spells for the adventury bound spells you'd need from Trust? Not that going on an adventure without a healer is a good idea anyway. Or going on an adventure with a healer.

Is there some aspect of fur-styling that the guild doesn't cover? Fur styling for pets or monsters maybe?

For Boxing Spells and the boring thing...

If I linked you to an internet thing that played music...

...could your scroll play the music?

Okay... uhhh, what was your first teacher's name? I'm going to try and have to set up an account for you to bypass some of the restrictions to MAYBE make it possible for the scroll to connect to an internet music area... and one of the things that I'm using to make an account for you wants some information to verify that you are you...

Okay... I have ATTEMPTED to create a music station for you. It might even work! Or it might not! But even if it works *perfectly* there will be issues...

First of all, try going here:

http://www.pandora.com/

What SHOULD come up is a page with a blue box, and two white boxes. In the box next to where it says email, write "delightinjustice@gmail.com". Do it without the ""'s. Hopefully, the process of translating that text to ketherian that I go through when I write here ALSO works to translate the *exact* name when you write it back!

And for the password, write "delightintree" again without the quotes. Then tap the little blue circle to the right. If all goes WELL, some music should start playing. UNFORTUNATELY, it might also play an advertisement, which might or might not be appropriately translated, and might or might not make any sense. Oh well, that's what gets us the free music, so silly advertisements are worth it. ALSO, this music player expects you to interact with it once in a while, since it doesn't want to play into an empty room, so if it stops for a while, you might have to tap something to the effect of "yes I am still here". And yes, it WILL be interrupted with advertisements. But it should have pretty music! Hopefully! If things work well!

..And this is assuming no one who reads this post hijacks your password... or opens the account and changes things around so it plays something not pleasant... which they would be SUPER MEAN if they did... so if that DOES happen, I will have to make a new one and show you how to come up with a password all your own. But, a chance at BEAUTIFUL MUSIC! It's worth it...

Ah well! Maybe Sythyry or you can edit the enchantment to let it play music? That'd be fun, because then we could record our voices, and put them for you to hear, and you could hear us, and it probably wouldn't be translated, but you could hear us! And we would be saying sounds that are different than primes can make, cause, you know, different voices and mouths and stuff, and that would be awfully neat. Though I don't know if illusidor sounds from your side of things would make it BACK...

Well, did you try my other ideas, like maybe trying to spont an illusidor spell or using your magic sense or whatever?

Date: 2010-07-09 07:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gavinfox.livejournal.com
Oh! Did you try looking at it with using magic sense while it does that? Or whatever other senses you might have access to? That might do something...

Heh, yea, that sort of thing uses a WHOLE WHOLE WHOLE lot of math and numbers to get the music to me! That's what makes it interactive, by 'programming' all the behavior that the person who created the tool to play back the music wanted it to have, using obscure and arcane math to do so. So every little color, every little behavior, all the boxes, all the images, anything that ever interacts with our internet, uses math that someone had to sit down and write, and make a device to use it, to work!

Although... locador is probably good at that, because in Sythyry's scroll, that Locador demon said terms that I recognized from higher dimensional mathematics (which is a different branch of math than computer science, the one that our internet works on). So we do have the study of that sort of thing too, and it is kinda maddening, just like all that locador stuff on your end is too! However, at this point most of our locador math is theoretical and descriptive, cause we can't actually cast SPELLS, we can just use it to describe the universe around us. But one day, we might be able to do weird locador portal things without spellcasting of any sort, using just mechanical devices and natural science... it will just probably take longer than my lifetime to get to that point...

Okay, let me describe the pictures that show when it is playing..

To the LEFT would be all the 'stations' I created, all the song settings, and they would be checked, since I put a bunch of premade stations together to all be one 'quickmix' station for you. To the RIGHT would be little boxes, and the pictures would be the albums (um, think of them as images that were originally on the illusidor devices in which the musicians recorded the music). Underneath each little picture should be a little bar, that shows how far the song is until being done, and it's made to be interactive, so you can 'thumbs up' a song to play it more, or 'thumbs down' it to play it less, and you can pause in the middle of a song with the || bars, or skip to the next one with the >>| symbol. Just so you know, the VOLUME symbol would be the, um one with the ))) next to a, uh, triangle like symbol, which would present you with a slider to increase and lower the volume... but it is already automatically set to "halfway to full", so I doubt increasing the volume would help... maybe you could spont a spell to let the music that is 'playing' get to you?

Pandora doesn't really work right on Internet Explorer; I'm not sure that it's reasonable to expect the Scroll of Awesome to support Flash (or Java or whatever).

Otherwise you could just point her to Robot Unicorn Attack (http://games.adultswim.com/robot-unicorn-attack-twitchy-online-game.html) or something.

Date: 2010-07-09 07:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gavinfox.livejournal.com
By her description, it DID seem to support it! Cause she was able to login, and that requires flash or java or whatever they are using. So obviously, the GODS support Flash, and Java, and such...

From: [identity profile] gavinfox.livejournal.com
Also, we'd have to point her at flash games that only have a mouse click interface, with no "move the mouse to control the game" and no "keyboard" interface. It would have to be point and click ONLY stuff. Anyone know any good ones?

well...

What, spont a little something to play music for her without Pandora's help?

Better yet, perhaps she could ask the puppeteers about the work they do. And if Ms. Delight can learn to make music, perhaps they'd be interested in bound spells to do just that.
