20 Lage 4385: Day Off!

Dear Boomer-marooner-macaroonser:
I think my roommate's been at my scroll because I didn't write that funny little note in here about Gormorror after I signed the scroll yesterday. Although that little picture doesn't look like her and the little picture by what I wrote looks kind of like me. And of course her name's not "Terrycloth" the last time I checked but she might have changed it in the last couple of days. I haven't talked to her in a while, what with work and finishing the scroll and her working nights. Anyways I don't know who else it could be. I know it's not you, your scroll is still right here since I haven't gotten to posting it yet.
I'm not sure where the little pictures come from. I don't remember doing anything that would make little pictures of whoever wrote stuff. It's pretty clever though. I'd've done it if I thought to! Assuming that's what it's doing.
But that's not why I opened the scroll to write. I have good news! I don’t have to go to the shop today!
This is because I got fired yesterday. Which is not such good news, I guess. I am kinda bummed about it. Not that I liked the shop especially and I am getting bored of fur-styling (again) but having an income is convenient for all kinds of things. Like rent. But I’m paid up for the rest of the week anyway so it’s not a big deal. I’m sure I can scrounge up some lozens before then.
Mostly though I’m relieved that I don’t have to go to work today and I can’t do any enchanting this week even if I wanted to which Seven Staring Gods I don’t because I am SO SICK of enchanting after taking TWELVE CURSED WEEKS to finish this scroll (partly because it was complicated and mostly because I kept screwing something or other up and blowing the week’s work) but anyway yesterday was the final day, which comes after the last full week of work, so I don’t have a full week in which to start a new enchantment. So I didn’t have to be awake at dawn. SLEEP GLORIOUS SLEEP HOW I MISSED YOU. z.z
I am ticked at Abbsers for firing me though. I hate getting fired. I want to quit when I feel like quitting not when some stupid owner gets whiny about me being late. So what if it was the fourth day in a row that I’d been late! She knew I was working on an enchantment when she hired me. I told her I couldn’t guarantee being in before evening and she said that was fine then. It’s not my fault Brightfall quit and Abbsers started scheduling me for afternoons. I didn’t tell her I could always make afternoons, just that I usually could. Or maybe I said that I could that week because I’d botched the week’s work on the Scroll of Awesome* on the second day but she should’ve known that wouldn’t apply to the next week. Except that maybe I’d told her I’d be done with the project in five weeks and it had already been nine. ANYWAY! She was being totally unreasonable, is my point.
* I'm not really calling it the Scroll of Awesome. I need a better name than that. You'd think I'd've come up with something in the last TWELVE WEEKS I've been making it but no.
Not that Abbsers exactly fired me for being late. She yelled at me for a ninth of an hour about it but then my first appointment (all right third technically but I’d already missed the first two) showed up and Abbsy-poo quit chewing my ears off so I could work. Everything went fine for a few hours until my fourth (sixth) appointment which was Esquire Vina de LaGrasse. She wanted her fur styled just like the new Exchequer’s. Which was an unbelievable appalling horrible idea because the new Exchequer is giant and broad-shouldered and styles her fur in short tight plain curls. It looks okay on her, if you don’t mind plain, but Vinsy has gorgeous long straight fur and she’s a tiny wisp of a thing and if I styled her fur into short plain curls she’d disappear when she turned sideways. Of course I tried to convince Vinsy not to do it but would she listen? Nooooooo. “The Exchequer displays the height of style! I MUST IMITATE HER NO MATTER HOW RIDICULOUS IT MAKES ME LOOK.”
So into my little curtained nook we went for me to style her up in her new repulsive look and she took a nap like she usually does because having your fur styled is sort of boring and sort of soothing and even more tedious than being the fur-styler. Not that you’d know anything about it, Boomsy! And I tried to cut her and curl her, I really did, but it was just too awful. Instead I spent my cley and time tinting her russets to a deep rich red and put teeny-you-hardly-notice-them-sparks in her fur and layered it so her fur’d be a bit less full and poofy which was the main thing she was complaining about when she demanded the Exchequer’s style. And worked in this subtle but gorgeous knotwork pattern in blonde fur to frame her hair and down her back and arms. I’m telling you, it was my best work ever! Vinsy’s never looked so good. I was almost done when Abbsers came in and absolutely HOWLED because of course Abbsers knew it wasn’t what the customer’d asked for. Which woke Vinsy up, and then Vinsy started howling, and I tried to explain that I’d just wanted her to see something different and OF COURSE if she didn’t like it I could re-do it in EXCHEQUER EXTRA AWFUL for her and it wasn’t like I was going to charge her twice or anything and anyway didn’t she look great?
But neither one of them would listen to me and Vinsy stormed out of the shop -- well if she had a party to attend in a third of an hour she should’ve told me earlier! -- swearing she’d never come to Abbsers’s shop EVER AGAIN. Then Abbser-wabsers said I was fired for being insolent and insulting and insubordinate and incommunicado and ignorant and unpleasant and overbearing and absentee and absconded and some other vowelicious stuff. I forget.
But this does mean I've got the afternoon AND the evening free free free! I'm gonna go out now and see if I can find anyone to catch a play or a puppet show with me. And I'll post your scroll too so you can start writing me back. That'll be fun!

Date: 2010-06-16 10:56 pm (UTC)Still, best work or not, if a high priest hires you to bury him in a shallow grave, get out your shovel and start digging. Even if it does sound crazy. Perhaps your customer has an ulterior motive: imitating the Exchequer is a fool's errand, but flattering the Exchequer might have some point.

Date: 2010-06-17 12:59 pm (UTC)I didn't think of that.
But ... but ... it would have been SO HORRIBLE. Even if she did have a good reason I'm not sure I could do that to her poor innocent beautiful fur! I guess I should have told her to have one of the others do it. In the first place. Except I didn't want Abbsers whinging at me for breaking another appointment. AGH.
It's better this way anyhow I had a great time on my day off!
