Studies-Too-Hard wasn't at the Buttery but Naefar and Tripriver were out by the fountain so I stopped to talk to them. "Hallo! Have you seen Studies-Too-Hard?"

Naefar shook his head. Tripriver glared at me. "No! What makes you think I'd know? Do I look like his keeper?"

"Noooo but you were studying with him last time I was here. I thought you were doing a spraddle together?"

She sniffed and turned away. "You thought wrong."

Naefar shrugged at me, turning up his hands. I asked him, "Oh Naefar I wanted to ask is Leap through this Gate to the Doomsome Nendrai named after something Sythyrs did?"

Naefar looked at me. "Do you know anyone else who regularly deals with a nendrai?"

"Ummm ... most of the people on the Strayway?"

"... all right, good point. The professor says he's pretty sure that the wizard's trip to Srineia is going to provide at least one new magical disaster to add to the coursework."

"More than one! Zie's had at least three so far. Four? Wait some of them weren't magical disasters."

Naefar stared at me a bit. "How do you know?"

"Sythyry told me some of them when zie was visiting! Also zie keeps a journal and they're all in it and oh I can read the journal now using my enchanted scroll. Even when zie's in Eigrach!" I am so impressed that the Scroll of Awesomenessity can read zir journal when zie's eight thousand miles away.

"Where?"

"Eigrach. It's a city in Srineia. They haven't wrecked it yet but Sythyry's nendrai did almost destroy Dossimar for harboring pirates. And zir nendrai kidnapped some of zir clients' kids and zir pilot and got them all killed and Sythyry got them resurrected but one of them is merged with a Locador angel now. That's a pretty rare magical catastrophe!"

" ... can I borrow that scroll of yours? For research? It's a primary source! Pleeeeeease?" Naefar gave me big puppy-dog-pleading eyes and clasped his hands together and wagged his tail.

I giggled. "You can but I need it back oh I don't have it right now Voidsy's looking at it. You can stop by and look at it some time if you want though."

"Yes! I'll get at least one grade better than 'tolerably considered' this term!" He shook his fists in the air triumphantly. Tripriver rolled her eyes and fell backwards into the fountain to turn waterform and go for a swim. I waved bye and left to see if I could find Studies-Too-Hard.

I finally found Studies-Too-Hard in the Green Velvet Quietroom off of the Strenata Memorial Library. The Quietroom has a ritual on it that muffles sound over the green velvet carpet that's between the tables so it's a good place to concentrate. Studies was easy to pick out because practically everyone else in there was Rassimel. I slipped over to the table he was sharing with Paraffa. She's a black Rassimel woman with two white stripes that go vertically along the sides of her nose, up her forehead, and back through her hair. They were bent over a copy of Painted Eggs of Ketheria in the Third Millenium, Volume Four. Volumes Two, Three and Five were next to them, along with a half-dozen other books on painted eggs and two on spraddling.

"Here, this one, we can comp it for the Oval of Spirals and Mnenorzion," Studies-Too-Hard was saying, pointing to one of the illustrations. "With an additional grade for the difference in artists since they're not quite the same caliber, but the design density, popularity, rarity, substances, and period are all comparable. Right?"

Paraffa was looking up as I stepped past the muffling velvet and in front of their table. I waved and she gave me a kind of guilty look and edged her chair away from Studies. "Delight! A surprise to see you here. A nice surprise!" she added quickly. "It is, Studies-Too-Hard?" Paraffa's not from Ketheria so she speaks a little funny.

Studies jerked his head up. "Delight! In here!"

"In-Justice to-day actually." I smiled at them and continued, "I was just stopping by to say hallo and make sure you hadn't been eaten by monsters (I had this strange nightmare and well it's a long story nevermind)."

"A-heh." Studies-Too-Hard leaned back in his chair, shifting it farther from Paraffa's. "No, not eaten by monsters. I'm not doing adventuring any more. Just going to school now! And spraddling. With my friend. We're just doing a spraddle here. Nothing else."

"I know I heard you spraddling when I came up. And you've got books on painted eggs all around you. And you were talking about it being due at the end of this week when I saw you on the second day of it."

"Right! Right. You know all about it." Studies gave me a relieved smile.

"A class we are in together," Paraffa explained unnecessarily. "On the appreciating of painted eggs."

I nodded. They edged a little farther apart. "I thought Tripriver was going to spraddle with you Study-buddy? What happened?" I asked.

"Uh ... she didn't like our methodology, I guess." Studies-Too-Hard said. "So ... still unemployed?"

"Yes ... I asked the library here if they're hiring but they only take students for shelvers and the other simple stuff. And anything else I wouldn't know how to do plus I'd need a guild membership."

Paraffa made sympathetic noises and we made small talk for a few more minutes before I excused myself. "I'll let you two get back to spraddling have fun byeeee!"

After that I went to may parents' house. I was pretty sure they'd be happy to talk to me.

If they were just hanging out or kissing or something, that would be one thing, but spraddling with another woman is unforgivable!

*Checks* Oh Spraddling is the same as Straddling, something that is usually done in sex, but not always. Uhm, is there a mistranslation?

Ah, well we have found a major limit of whatever is automatically translating the language between worlds then!

It's probably just jargon; I don't see why you'd call it a mistranslation.

Spreading out the collection and finding common elements that straddle various parts of it, maybe?

So, we can assume it is, indeed, a 'jargon' type word then. Does the actual word used SOUND similar or have similar form or a similar root to the word for 'Straddle' in Ketherian then, or is that simply an artifact of translation?

I may have missed it - spraddling is what again?

I see! So why are they spraddling?

While I believe the others have alluded to this, Delight, I shall point out directly: judging by his reaction, Studies-Too-Hard is interested in Paraffa, and likely romantically.

He was embarrassed when you happened upon him, worried almost, and eager to note that they were merely spraddling. If I understand correctly, Studies-Too-Hard is an Orren, and thus this could be taken as something which is slightly-less-then-acceptable, socially. In addition, Tripriver seems distinctly bitter; either jealous or distasteful, I would wager. I would recommend discretion, though, in passing on this opinion of mine. After all, even if he is traff, he clearly doesn't want it known.

Of course, I could be wrong; it may be that he was accused of being traff for preferring to study with Paraffa, and he's afraid that it might become a rumor, so he's nervous.

As an aside, of course the translation is imperfect; otherwise the journal would translate "Sythyry" as something like "Doomlizard" by now. More seriously, some names do, and others don't get translated, apparently based upon their language of origin. Ooh, I wonder...

I'm going to count that as More Doom.
