Outcast roused me from my blanket as soon as the sun was lit because we sure didn't want the ghempoch to find us first. One of the villagers who wasn't going to be fighting cast Bouncy Vigor on all of us so we were AWAKE! And alert! And ready for anything hopefully including a ghempoch.

We laid our ambush on a little island a half-mile from the norren's dam, downstream from a small hill. We tethered bound spells for the ghempoch to trigger in the river on the hill. Then Secret concealed us beneath little Illusidor spells and did a few big Illusidor spells. She shifted the island's image upstream so it was on hiding the actual river where we'd put the traps but the island still looked like it was lower than the real river level. Then she made an illusion of dozens of Primes celebrating on it. They were singing songs in Ketherian and cheering for the ghempoch being gone. Last Secret did fireworks illusions, sending giant sparkly flares into the dawn sky.

We waited and hoped the ghempoch wasn't really gone or at least 'not gone after the caravan or some unsuspecting prime settlement'. Actually gone-gone, like 'back to Verticals', would be FINE.

After a third of an hour I was wishing Outcast hadn't wanted us to wait until noon before giving up on the ambush. The illusion spell concealing us was similar to Quiet Veil which meant if we talked or moved or did pretty much anything the spell would break.

Ambushes are BORING. And we were supposed to wait for NINE HOURS like this? I should have curled up and gone to sleep before she cast it on me. Nightbloom or someone could've woken me if/when the ghempoch showed up.

Fortunately the ghempoch arrived after less than two-thirds of an hour. He dived howling for the illusory primes with firebats spiraling out of his big flapping ears. He struck the surface of the real river before reaching the illusion, of course, but he had too much momentum to stop and went SPLOOSH into it. His fire bats put themselves out (Thank you Merklundum the Dog Who Killed a Fish!) by following him in. Then the traps went off.

There were a couple of Pepper Strikes from Nightbloom to momentarily blind him (duplicates to make him waste cley resisting them) and some Water Whips from an Orren villager to lash at him and harass him and some other stuff I forget. We didn't have anything that was very dangerous to use as a trap -- bound spells are pretty weak so hardly any of them are GOOD traps unless you're like Sythyry or somewizard. But they could annoy and distract him and they did!

Secret ended the illusion so we could all see where the ghempoch was and we all attacked! Mostly the Herethroy used bows and spears and staves. Outcast had a steel sword we'd let him keep from looting the bandits. Secret confused the ghempoch and the firebats with new illusions. Trust healed (duh). I was pretty useless this fight since the point was to fight the ghempoch and we couldn't if I threw him Nowhere, and each firebat was a one-shot so imprisoning them didn't help a lot either. So I used all the weapons I was carrying one after another to get some practice in with each if nothing else.

The ambush went WAY better than I'd expected no one even got killed! Well except the ghempoch. Among the good guys we had some bad burns and almost-mortal slashes but nothing Trust couldn't fix. The ghempoch was too confused and distracted to fight us off effectively while we stabbed and slashed and hacked his wings off and one of his ears (that doesn't stop firebats from coming out of it unfortunately) until finally his spirit gave up and abandonded his body. Whew!

Then of course we had to bring him back because Secret made us PROMISE. So Trust cast Spirit Reunion to keep the ghempoch's spirit from wandering away from his corpse while he was still dead. We hauled the corpse mostly out of the water which was HARD because ghempochs are BIG. Next we tied up the corpse really really well (Trust had to do a second Spirit Reunion in the middle because it took a while!). Last we staked down his flaming claw so it was submerged and pinned his head between two logs so that his nose and mouth were above water but his ears were underneath.

All the villagers left now except for Secret. Outcast and I went into waterform so we could be taken for norren which meant the only people who definitely looked prime were Nightbloom and Trust. We had Nightbloom fall back.

Then Trust brought the ghempoch back to life.

So did the bats keep coming out of the severed ear or out of the place where the ear used to be?

Yay for defeating the ghempoch!

... Oo, is that a treasure? Or is it attached to him so that it'd kill him (ror something) if you took it away?
