So we're not back in Vheshrame yet.
I want to blame Outcast for this or at least Mirhandrax but it's actually Trust's fault more than anyone.
All right maybe not so much Trust's fault as the ghempoch's.
See, to start with, the coach we took out of Ulmarn Mene wasn't actually going to Vheshrame. This part IS Outcast and Mirhandrax's fault come to think of it because if they hadn't gotten themselves exiled we wouldn't've had to take the first coach we could find going anywhere. But NO. Instead, we got a coach that took us to this modest village that was outwards from Ulmarn Mene and from there we tried to find a coach going to Vheshrame that wasn't going through Ulmarn. Which none of them were. So we got a coach that was headed towards Daukhrame instead (I should've just stayed on it and come to visit you, Boomsy!) But we got off that coach at a different little village before we got to Daukhrame Mene even, because there was a caravan from Daukhrame that was on its way to Vheshrame and they were willing to give us passage in exchange for guard duties. The caravan was EVEN SLOWER than the coaches had been somehow. It stopped at every little village EVER.
Eventually, it got to the village of Eriach, or at least the smoking remains of buildings where Eriach was supposed to be. This was NOT GOOD! I don't know how common fires are for extradiminensional nonprimes, but in my universe we're very paranoid about fire so we treat all of our buildings with magic so that they won't catch fire and/or will put themselves out if they somehow do. You're not going to find a prime village in Ketheria that burned down by accident.
We picked through the wreckage looking for clues to what happened, and found a couple of primes who'd been burned to death. It was way too late for us to do anything to help them unfortunately. The primes with the caravan were torn between "we should find out what happened to the rest of the primes from Eriach and help them" and "we should RUN AWAY before whatever it was comes back".
What it made me think of most was Kijji and the way he'd destroyed that one village with Fire Bees. Twice. I didn't say "it must be Kijji!" because of course Kijji wouldn't be in Ketheria. But I did think it was someone using Fire Bees or at least something like Fire Bees.
Since we were adventurers we decided we'd better find out what had happened. Or at least, Mirhandrax and Trust thought we should investigate. Nightbloom wanted to stay with the caravan, whatever they did. I didn't care. Outcast had an opinion too but I didn't care about that either HE'S NOT WITH ME HE DOESN'T GET TO VOTE.
Anyway, we got on with investigating while the caravan dithered. There weren't any monster tracks which meant whatever did this was probably flying. Or disembodied. Can mentavores cast spells while disembodied? I don't know. Is Kijji still reading my journal?
Mirhandrax did find recent prints from primes: Herethroy and Orren. We tracked the Orren down to the nearest river where Outcast and I went for a swim to look for them. Outcast found an underwater entrance to a beaver dam and investigated. That's where the Orren were hiding! Some of them were all right but most had gotten very badly burned and a couple had even died but their bound Heal the Awful Wound spells saved them and unlike the ones trapped at the village they hadn't just died right away again.
We pieced together what had happened from them. A ghempoch had flown up out of the Verticals and come after their village. Ghempochs are huge scary nonprimes that fly on little buzzy bug wings and have big clawed forelegs (one of which is always burning) and tough furry carapaces. When they're mad, and they're always mad around groups of primes, fiery bats fly out of their ears. They don't much like primes and they really don't like seeing lots of primes at once. So when this one saw a whole village full of them, he went berserk and tried to kill EVERYONE. One of the villagers was pretty good with Illusidor and tricked the ghempoch into thinking the fleeing primes were dead already and that there was a much larger prime settlement just over a hill. While the ghempoch went to investigate the
obvious distraction, the actual survivors scurried off in all directions for their safeholes.
This had all happened just an hour or two ago, which meant the ghempoch was very likely to be in the area somewhere, maybe looking for another large group of primes to weed out. Like, say, the caravan we were with.
Soooooo ... Outcast and I bolted back to the caravan.
