10 Chirreb 4385: Torture
Apr. 21st, 2011 07:36 am(Still writing about 5 Chirreb I'm neeeeeever going to catch up! 5 Chirreb was a really busy day.)
Interrogation
The mewelicaps were still tied up and bobbing by the tree we'd left them at along with one of the two Cani bandits. Windchime and Chain Lighting weremaking out nearby watching them so that part was fine.
The interrogation of the other Cani wasn't going so well though. I'm not a particularly good tracker but it was easy to follow the sounds of a Cani whining, sobbing and pleading to a spot under the wide canopy of a bansimmon tree where Purrzhon and the others had taken the prisoner. As soon as Nightbloom and I showed up, Trust ran to us crying. "Dee! I don't want to be an executioner's healer! Make him stop!"
I looked over at Purrzhon and Mirhandrax. "... I thought you were going to interrogate the Cani bandit not torture our Cani healer?"
The bandit was tied to the tree trunk. Purrzhon was in front of him, ears flat and tail lashing, while Mirhandrax had his arms folded and his mouth set in a grim line. The bandit probably looked the happiest. Purrzhon snarled at me, "If Trust wishes not to heal the bandit, it is no concern of mine. I am not the one to be missing an ear or an eye or a life."
Mirhandrax lifted his brow, the whiskers about his eyes splaying. "The terms of surrender specified that we would not permanently injure or maim the prisoners."
"I can't not heal him if Purrzhon kills him," Trust whimpered at me, his blue-and-silver striped tail tucked between his legs. "But I don't want to torture anyone! And if I bring him back after Purrzhon kills him then I might as well be the torturer myself!"
The bandit gave Purrzhon a mocking smile. "Looks like your healer has a conscience, no-hands. Bet you could learn a thing or two from him."
Purrzhon spun and jumped on the prisoner, clinging with hind claws and one forepaw to the Cani's body and raking the claws of his free paw over the bandit's muzzle. Nose to nose with the bandit, Purrzhon growled, "If you are wanting to speak, say how many of your fellows are in the snag. If you are not saying this, be silent."
Blood dripped from the clawmarks and spotted around Purrzhon's hindclaws as they sunk through the thick leather covering the Cani's legs. The bandit grimaced but didn't say anything else.
Trust whimpered and hid behind me.
Mirhandrax said, "Perhaps Nightbloom could watch the prisoner while we talk this over elsewhere."
Our Savior
After we'd gotten out of earshot, I asked Purrzhon, "Do we need to torture the prisoner?" We still had to talk quietly because Cani have good ears and we didn't want to get so far away that we couldn't hear Nightbloom if she needed help. Trust was trying to hide behind me with his tail still between his legs. Mirhandrax just looked grave.
"The getting of the information is the whole point of the plan for which we are waiting the days and days," Purrzhon hissed at me, tail still lashing.
"I know I know but do we have to torture him to get it? Maybe we could trick it out of him? Or ask him nicely?"
"Ask him nicely The threatener of young children and abuser of old men, and the Orren thinks if she asks him nicely he will tell us whatever we wish?"
"He might? Have you tried?"
"We did," Mirhandrax said. "I did, anyway. He's not cooperative."
"And you don't mind torturing him?" I asked. Trust whined pitifully.
Mirhandrax shrugged. "The terms of surrender specified that we wouldn't cause permanent death or injury. Inflicting a little pain is neither, and these primes have done far worse to their victims. It is not unjust."
Trust cowered behind me. "But I became a healer to help primes," he whimpered. Poor Trust, this must've been really really important to him to defy both the nominal and actual group leader over it. If either of them had been Cani I bet he would have just gone along and been miserable instead of resisting (and being miserable).
"Maybe you could just pretend to torture the prisoner instead of actually torturing him?" I suggested.
Mirhandrax and Purrzhon looked at me like I was crazy. "How do you do that?"
"Umm ... I don't know?" While I was still trying to think of a workable solution, we heard the sound of wings. Windchime was weaving slowly between the tall blue-grey trunks of the bansimmon trees, underneath boughs Windchime set down nearby. "Hoy, how's it going?" We all looked at her. She coughed. "Yeahhhhh, I see. Anyway, the one you left with us is talking now, thought you might to question him instead."
Everybody stared at her. "You are interrogating him?" Purrzhon demanded. "I am not hiring the monsters to torment the Primes!"
"No! Not at all!" Windchime said defensively. "Well ... not exactly. One of the Rassimel from the house wanted to ... uh. Talk with him. All right, not exactly talking with him. Anyway, he promised he'd cooperate and do whatever you asked if we just made the Rassi leave him alone, and we knew you wanted information. So ... "
"Let's see what he'll tell us, then. I am glad your conversation with the household was more productive than ours has been, " Mirhandrax said to me.
"I didn't know it was!" I said.
