8 Chirreb 4385: Great Plan
Nov. 21st, 2010 10:29 pmSorry about the abrupt ending on the last entry. Things FINALLY got interesting!
I'm still alive, obviously, and a lot of stuff has happened now and I want to try and tell it in order without ruining the story TOO much except with stuff like "I'm still alive" which is kind of obvious anyway. But you wouldn't know any of the other surprises like whether or not any one else survived. Except that I guess I'd be a lot more upset if Trust or Nightbloom or anyone really had gotten badly hurt and couldn't be healed so you'd know that too. All right, fine, everyone on my side is just fine. Are you happy now?
So, now that you've ruined every possible point of suspense, I'll go on. Unless you want something else spoiled, like whether or not we’ve actually succeeded and gotten Purrzhon's stuff back or if we're fleeing with a pack of angry Mewellicap-riding Cani in close pursuit or if we broke off the top of the snag and destroyed everything inside it when it crashed to the branch floor below or whatever. Are you willing to wait for me to get to it for that, at least? You better be, because I'm not telling yet! Nyah!
So two days ago, on the sixth day of Chirreb, Nightbloom and Mirhandrax were on watch for activity at the bandit snag. Nightbloom saw them emerge first, though she didn't alert the rest of us immediately because she wanted to be sure they weren't just changing guards for the billionth time. But she was pretty sure they weren't because they usually did guard changes in groups of two or four and this was eight. As soon as she was sure of her count and that they'd flown below the lowest of their guard posts, she and Mirhandrax let the rest of us know.
We passed around the Little Bird talisman to get flight on all of us and then we shadowed them from beneath the canopy of the forest. The group that had left was three Mewellicaps, a Khtsoyis, and two Cani riding in this sort of basket that the Khtsoyis carried. Khtsoyis are really strong! That’s why Boomsy and most of the other dockworkers are Khtsoyis. Anyway it was a good thing for us that the Khtsoyis was doing the lifting because our flight spell was faster than a Khtsoyis but not nearly as fast as a Mewellicap. Then again I’m not sure a Mewellicap would be that fast if it had to carry even one Cani nevermind two.
The bandits were flying high at first. I guess they didn’t think they needed to be stealthy. Purrzhon flew near the top of the forest to keep an eye on them, because he was actually good at keeping out of sight. The rest of us just tried not to make a lot of noise as we weaved between bluebell tree trunks and followed Purrzhon. I think Windchime and Chain Lightning hated that part the most, because even though they're better fliers than any of us they're used to stretching out their wings to fly and it was really cramped between the trees. Fortunately, they do obstacle course training so they've got experience with flying under constraints too.
After about an hour of flying, the bluebell trees turned into a bansimmon orchard and Purrzhon motioned for us all to slow down. We to the edge of the orchard and could see a Rassimel farmhouse. The group of bandits landed, whooping and shouting. Some of the Mewellicaps tore up the garden by the front door while one of the Cani banged on the door and yelled "Tosquinet! It’s time to pay up, old man!"
While they were making a lot of noise and not paying attention to anything but the house, Purrzhon told us that he wanted us to move into positions in the orchard nearest the door and use Quiet Veil. When they left, we’d attack them.
We circled slowly through the orchard towards the point nearest the door, not wanting to give them any reason to look our way. I noticed Mirhandrax was kind of antsy as an old Rassimel answered the door. He gave the bandit leader a little bag and I was thinking that maybe this wasn’t going to take long enough for us to get positioned where Purrzhon wanted us and they were bound to see us if they looked our way while we were this close and not veiled.
But then the Cani didn’t seem happy with the contents of the bag. He threw it to one of the Mewellicaps, and then pushed the Rassimel to the ground yelling something about it not being nearly enough. The Rassimel cowered and pleaded. The two Cani stormed into the house, followed by two of the Mewellicap.
Inside the house, someone screamed for help.
Then we kind of had to give up on the ambush idea, because Mirhandrax charged for the house.
